If you’ve had a bad experience or two with purchases for your business in the past, the biggest mistake you can make is deciding never to invest again. I know it’s hard if you feel like you’ve been ripped off, but it’s a limiting mindset that will hold you back from getting to the next level in your business.
The fastest way to uplevel your business is to learn from somebody who’s already done what you’re trying to do. It would’ve been so easy for me to say, “I’m not doing that again,” after spending US$5,000 on one of the earliest style courses I took. But if I hadn’t reinvested, I wouldn’t be where I am now.
So, how do you avoid these big financial mistakes?
1) DO. YOUR. RESEARCH.
Look back at previous disappointing course purchases and work out what the problems were.
Did you need more detail?
Did it feel a bit out of date?
Did it need to be more cutting edge?
Do you need one-to-one sessions, or are you happier in a group setting?
Do you work better with live classes, or are you more comfortable watching videos in your own time?
How do things need to be set up for you to get the most out of your investment?
Don’t be afraid to ask the course creator questions so you’re sure about what you’re getting.
2) Don’t be swayed by shiny objects like I am
I’m terrible! Whenever anything new comes along, I want it! 😅
To avoid the tempting offers that pop up everywhere, you need to understand your personality. What makes you tick?
Before hitting ‘Buy Now’, think about what you need to learn right now. What is the next step for your business?
What’s the thing that’s going to get you to the next level?
Only invest in that. You can look at other stuff further down the line.
3) Work out the return on investment
What is the price of the course or program you’re interested in? Find out and then work out how many paying clients you’ll need to buy from you to earn the money back.
An experienced colour analyst who also does make-up should be charging at least €500 minimum for a consultation. If you were to invest €1,200 in my 5 Weeks to Online Colour Expert program to take their services online, you’d have your money back plus €300 extra from seeing your next three clients!
Project that out a year and you’d be getting a return of 18K with just 3 clients a month. Now that’s a good return on a 1.2K investment.
I know that many stylists shy away from the money side of business because we love our work so much and prefer to concentrate on our passion. However, you cannot pay your bills with love. Now, more than ever, you need to pay super close attention to your finances. You cannot be giving away so much of your experience for bargain basement prices. Nor can you purchase courses and programs willy-nilly. Make sure your figures stack up by always working out your return on investment first.
4) Stay in your power
The biggest investment I’ve ever made in my business is €36,000 for 12 months of one-to-one mentoring. That was a BIG decision! I knew that if I invested with the right person, I would get a return on it. I followed all the steps mentioned above, and once I signed up, I ensured I didn’t hand my power over to the mentor.
When buying courses, it’s vital to stay in your power and not give it away to the person you’re buying from. You must turn up to all the calls, do the reading, and implement the tools you’re given. Whatever you signed up for must be completed. You don’t automatically get results when you sign up for something new. The results only come if you play your part. Show up and do the work, do not rely on anyone else to do it for you.
5) Work on shifting your mindset
You are at your current level in business because of your mindset. When you change your mindset and energy you’ll get to that next level. Most people don’t understand that. I certainly didn’t. I thought the answer to getting me to the next level was to buy another strategy. No, no, no! You get to a point in business where you don’t need more strategy; you need an improved mindset and to shift your perspective on things.
So many people buy courses because they think they’ll get results, but what’s often missing is the mindset work; the shift that must happen to use the strategy the way it was meant.
6) Accept that mistakes will sometimes happen
Even after years of experience, you will sometimes make mistakes. It is a fact of life. I spent over €1,000 on a course that wasn’t suitable for me last year. It was a mindset course that was far too woo-woo for me. Big mistake! It didn’t work for me, and I should’ve known better.
However, it did point me in the right direction and eventually, I found something else which taught me all about energy management and how to work with your body’s chakras to deliver the changes in mindset that will get you up to that elusive next level.
That initial poor investment led me to something that’s totally changed my business and dramatically improved the results I’m getting with my clients. So, while you won’t always get what you expected from some programs, you nearly always get something better.
